The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
