Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team could be building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be approached in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
